Prepreg processes and resin infusion require vacuum bagging as part of the cure process. Traditional layups may be achieved without use of a bag. However, given the option, vacuum bagging yields better primary bonds, improved surface finish and overall quality in parts than strictly air cured composite parts.
In industry, tack often refers to the instantaneous adhesion (before the resin is cured) [6]. Existing work on prepreg tack measurement methods can be grouped into two main categories: probe tack tests and peel tests (see ASTM D2979 [7] and ASTM D3167 [8]).
Prepregs are typically used by experienced fabricators who are interested in minimizing the weight of their part. Typical applications include aerospace, racing, sporting goods, pressure vessels, and commercial products.
2.2. Test parameters raised from AFP/ATL and automated draping processes. Prepreg/tooling temperature at compaction point: Influencing the viscoelastic properties of the prepregs matrix resin, temperature adjustment can be regarded as one of the most beneficial measures to control prepreg tack.
The prepreg layup process involves placing layers of resin-impregnated reinforcement or other reinforcement materials in a precise position by hand. Workers manually manipulate individual plies and place them in position on a mold leaving no air pockets between each layer.
At its core, prepreg tack refers to the stickiness of prepreg materialspre-impregnated with resin fibersthat facilitates their placement and adhesion during automated lay-up processes without intervening in the curing stage of epoxy.
