Physical Description. United States Air Force Staff Sergeant s rank insignia; three silver embroidered chevrons, single rocker, and five point star on blue cotton; authorized for wear on service uniform coat or tunic sleeve.
The pay grade for the rank of major is O-4. The insignia for the rank consists of a golden oak leaf, with slight stylized differences between the Army/Air Force version and the Marine Corps version.
Gold is worth more than silver, but silver outranks gold. This is because the Army decreed in 1832 that infantry colonels would wear gold eagles on an epaulette of silver and all other colonels would wear silver eagles on gold. When majors and lieutenant colonels received the leaves, this tradition could not continue.
The armed forces of the United States share a common system of officer insignia, using stars, eagles, leaves and bars to indicate rank. Most of the insignia are silver, but two are gold, and the gold insignia are junior to the silver. In most applications, gold is considered more valuable and thus senior to silver.
The Army still used chevrons on top and rockers beneath, but now added a conspicuous capital T in the field underneath the chevrons. The T stood for Technician and indicated some special trade. Technicians didnt lead men.
The rank insignia for Major is a gold oak leaf. Major is the 20th rank in the United States Air Force , ranking above Captain and directly below Lieutenant Colonel. A major is a Field Officer at DoD paygrade O-4, with a starting monthly pay of $5,274.
Officers at the O-1 pay grade wear one gold bar, O-2 wear one silver bar, O-3 wear two silver bars and warrant officers wear striped bars.
Since gold was more expensive than silver and since there were fewer Seconded LTs, the bean counters ordered gold bars for 2d Lts and gold leaves for Majors. Saved money. So the answer is the 2LT bar is gold because the Army was trying to save money.
