Iron gall ink was made up from galls (usually oak-galls), copperas [copper sulphate] or green vitriol [ferrous sulphate], and gum arabic, in varying proportions; carbon inks were developed using soot.
Printing Tack (Set Rate): This test measures the ability of a paper to absorb the thin oils from ink and the set rate of ink on our standard paper or any other paper. As the oils leave the ink film, the ink sets and after time, eventually dries. If the ink contains heavy oxidation-type oils, it sets slowly.
Ink tack is the force needed to split an ink film. In the lab. the ink manufacturer uses Inkometer to read the tack. But when you emulsify the ink on press, the tack goes down about 50% or so.
In multi-color printing, the first ink printed must have greater tack than the ink that will be printed on top of it, or the latter will not trap on the first ink. The tack of an ink can be measured with an Inkometer or a Tackoscope.
Rupturing or other deformation of a papers surface caused during ink transfer by the force of a sticky ink either separating the layers of a paper, forming a blister-like protrusion in the paper, or removing portions of the papers coating.
