The 180 peel test (ISO 8510-2, ASTM D 903) requires one flexible adherend to be sufficiently flexible to be bent back through 180 before being stripped from a more rigid adherend at a constant peel rate. This test is favoured for non-structural adhesives, for example pressure sensitive adhesives and tapes.
FINAT Test Method No. 2 (FTM 2) is used to investigate peel adhesion of laminates through an angle of 90 with a test speed of 300 mm per minute. Predominately used with laminates and packaging materials, it can also be used for coated laminates to investigate adhesion strengths.
FTM 9 Measurement of initial stickiness (Quick Stick) Procedure: An adhesive ribbon 25 mm wide and at least 175 mm long is attached to the clamp of a dynamometer. The loop is placed in contact with a stainless steel plate (or other material) in a contact area of 25 X 25 mm and is detached at a speed of 300 mm/min.
At a 180 angle, the result of the peel test is influenced by the thickness and degree of elasticity degree of the PSA tape. At a 90 angle, the result of the peel test is less influenced by these characteristics of the tape and is more reliable and consistent for the evaluation of adhesion and cohesion.
Pull-off adhesion testing is widely used to assess the protective coating process. It is also used to determine if a coating is fit for service in new construction and for repairs to existing structures.
The Loop Tack test is used to measure the tack force / strength of a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) ing to ASTM D6195. Pressure sensitive adhesives are typically applied to films, labels, tapes, and stickers where the initial tack force is an important characteristic of the product.
Method Fix each strip to the test plate with double-sided tape. The facing material can be peeled from the release substrate, or vice versa. Peel the laminate apart at an angle of 180 with a separation speed of 300 mm per minute.
