Indexing for ebooks means creating a traditional back-of-the-book-style index familiar to all readers, where locators (traditionally page numbers), are hyperlinked to their referenced passages within the ebook.
No matter whether youre publishing an ebook, paperback or hardcover version, your book should include a table of contents. Most ebook formatting software programs will automatically generate a table of contents based on your chapter headings.
Create TOCs Click Tools, hover over Table of Contents and select Generate Table of Contents. Click Tools again, hover over Table of Contents, and select Create HTML Table OfContents.
Double-click on the area of the table of contents and then you can add, delete, correct them as you like. After all the necessary editings, you can then click Save or Save As option to confirm the editing youve made for the ePub table of contents.

You can also use the ToC Editor by itself, without doing a conversion. Go to Preferences Interface Toolbars and add the ToC Editor to the main toolbar. Then just select the book you want to edit and click the ToC Editor button. The first option is Force use of auto-generated Table of Contents.
A table of contents is an ordered list of links into the content. Note that the epub:type attribute is not used outside of EPUB. Similarly, the role attribute is not necessary in EPUB unless the navigation document is included in the spine. Ordered lists are nested to reproduce the hierarchy of the publication.
For example, you can do that in Microsoft Word before converting your ebook to any other format. Simply click on References at the top bar, then choose the table of contents style you prefer and, voila, you have a clickable table of content.
