Spot welding (also known as resistance spot welding) is a resistance welding process. This welding process is used primarily for welding two or more metal sheets together by applying pressure and heat from an electric current to the weld area.
Welders can choose from three types of tack weld: standard, bridge, and hot tack weld. Here is how they differ: Standard tack welds are meant to be consumed during the final weld. Bridge tack welds are used across gaps. Hot tacking can also close a gap.
Tack welds are small and temporary welds that hold parts together ready for final welding. Using tack welds mean that fixtures may not be required to hold parts together to create a finished weld. Tack welds maintain the desired alignment and gap between the pieces of metal being joined.
Although some people get the two confused, tack welding and spot welding are actually quite different processes. Tack welds are a preliminary step that is used to position and secure pieces so a final weld can be done. Spot welds, on the other hand, are used as a final permanent join.
Tack welder qualification is mandatory in fabrication to ensure the tack welders skills to deposit sound tack welds. The WQT for tack weld qualification shall not be considered as a reference during actual fabrication. The actual tack welding on the job will be made in ance with a qualified WPS only.
Therere two type of tack-welds as defined in below: + Temporary: some yard make the temporary fit-up condition with un-qualified welder (fitter), thus the tack-weld will be removed later. + Incorporated: the tack-weld will not be removed after finish the tack.
What is the Tack Weld Symbol? There is no official tack weld symbol, but the spot weld symbol (a circle) can be used instead and placed above, below, or on the reference line to show tack welds.
Tack welds are small and temporary welds used to hold parts together before a final weld occurs. Tack welds help keep the right alignment and distance between the parts that are being fused together.
