Checking the saddle for comfort The saddle should not sit too low across, or too high off, your horses withers. Ideally, you should be able to fit two to three fingers in between the gullet and the top of the withers and one finger in between the side of the withers and the front of the saddle.
The best way to clean most horse tack is by using saddle soap and water. Mix the saddle soap with warm water and scrub the leather with a soft cloth or sponge until its clean. Once youre finished, rinse off your equipment in cold water and let it dry before storing.
Use the times you clean it to inspect it more thoroughly and clean it every time you come back from riding particularly after strenuous exercise. Always inspect tack after an accident and if in any doubt take it to you saddler.
A good way to monitor your tack health is to clean and condition it.What to look out for when cleaning tack: Cracking, thin, or dry leather. Stretched holes. Rusting, loose, or bent buckles. Check the girth for any signs of wear.
The single most important thing that you can do for your tack is to clean it regularly. Wipe it down after every ride, and clean and condition it weekly. At least every few months, take every part of your saddle and bridle apart and thoroughly clean, condition and inspect it.
Tack safety check Stretched holes. Elongated buckle holes are a sign of weakening leather. Loose hardware. Give all buckles, Chicago screws and hooks a solid wiggle as you clean. Cracks in the leather. Old, dry leather will usually crack before tearing, so take any fissures in leather seriously. Dont miss out!
It is essential that any tack used should be suitable for the purpose intended and fitted correctly. Damaged and ill-fitting tack can affect the horses comfort (causing behavioural problems when ridden) and may result in serious injuries.
Ideally, you should run a clean cloth over your tack after every ride paying special attention to any areas that may have come in contact with your horses sweat. If your tack is particularly dirty, muddy or coated in sweat, use a damp sponge instead.
The saddle pad is the first piece of tack youll put on your horse. This blanket provides a cushion between the horses back and the saddle. Keep reading to learn how to put a saddle pad on your horse.
The most basic types of tack are bridles, bits, saddles, saddle pads, and other types. English bridles come in a variety of types, depending on the use of the horse and the bit that is needed.
