Since a header is a shift that heads your boat more downwind, you need to tack your sailboat in headers to sail straight up the course toward the windward mark. If a boat is sailing on a heading tack, by tacking it will sail in a lift on the opposite tack.
The Gybe. Like a tack, the gybe takes place when you turn a boat through the wind and take it from one tack (say port) to another (say starboard) - or vice versa. The difference is that in the case of a gybe (as opposed to a tack) we have turned the stern (back) of the boat through the wind.
The Helm declares that they are beginning to tack by saying, Hard-A-Lee. There are a couple variations on this command and if you want to say something else, its your boat, just make sure everyone on your boat understands what you are commanding.
A tack is a nautical term both for the lower, windward corner of a sail and, separately, for the windward side of a sailing craft (side from which the wind is coming while under waythe starboard or port tack.
Jibing, one of the other turning maneuvers is simply the opposite of a tack. Recall that during a tack, the bow of the boat passes through the wind. During a jibe, the stern of the boat passes through the wind. We teach tacking before jibing because tacking is a safer turn.
A jib is a sail, a jibe is a way of changing direction. The captain jibes when the stern is turning through the wind and setting a zig-zag course something you will do a lot in racing, since the sails are always powering the boat in a jibe, its a faster way to turn.
The tack is the corner on a fore-and-aft sail where the luff (the forward edge) and foot (the bottom edge) connect and, on a mainsail, is located near where the boom and mast connect.
If the turn changes the wind from one side of the boat to the other, you will have tacked or jibed. It will be a TACK (also called coming about) if you turn the bow of the boat through the eye of the wind, and it will be a JIBE if you turn the stern through the eye of the wind.
