The Helm declares that they are beginning to tack by saying, Hard-A-Lee. There are a couple variations on this command and if you want to say something else, its your boat, just make sure everyone on your boat understands what you are commanding.
Tacking or coming about is a sailing maneuver by which a sailing craft (sailing vessel, ice boat, or land yacht), whose next destination is into the wind, turns its bow toward and through the wind so that the direction from which the wind blows changes from one side of the boat to the other, allowing progress in the
It might seem like a random term, but theres a reason that this sort of equipment is called tack. The term tack is short for tackle, which in turn is a reference used to explain riding or otherwise directing a domesticated horse.
Since a header is a shift that heads your boat more downwind, you need to tack your sailboat in headers to sail straight up the course toward the windward mark. If a boat is sailing on a heading tack, by tacking it will sail in a lift on the opposite tack.
Tacking is the sailing manoeuvre used to change a boats direction through an oncoming wind. Tacking a sailing boat calls for the crew to work as a co-ordinated team and is one of the first sailing skills to learn.
If the turn changes the wind from one side of the boat to the other, you will have tacked or jibed. It will be a TACK (also called coming about) if you turn the bow of the boat through the eye of the wind, and it will be a JIBE if you turn the stern through the eye of the wind.
Well, Tacking is where the wind starts off blowing from one side, moves to blowing over the front of the boat and then goes to the other side. And Gybing is the opposite, so the wind blows over the back of the boat during the turn.
We teach tacking before jibing because tacking is a safer turn. During a tack, the bow of the boat passes through the no-go zone. That causes the boat to lose some speed. Those two factors cause the mainsail to gently pass from one side to the other.
