Headers and footers can be used to display information in the top and bottom margins of your document. They can include details like the authors name, page numbers, the date, and more. To create your own header or footer from scratch, double-click the margin at the top or bottom of your document. This will unlock the header or footer area, so you can add whatever information you want. You can also use the tools on the Design tab, which will appear on the right side of the Ribbon. When youre done, you can close the header or footer using the button here, or by pressing Esc on your keyboard. If you dont have a lot of experience with headers and footers, you might want to start with a built-in preset instead. Preset headers and footers give you several different designs to choose from, so theyre a great choice for any document. Select the text and then click on Insert, then Link (or just press Ctrl+K after selecting the text).
In most cases, when you cant edit the header or footer, the reason is that the content isnt supported for editing in Word Online. You should be able to download the document to your local drive, though.
On the Shape Format tab, click Format Pane. Click the Shape Options tab if it isnt already selected. , and then click Text Box. Choose Top, Middle, or Bottom from the Vertical alignment drop-down list.
In the open document, move the pointer to the top border of any page in the document. Double click when the icon appears to restore the top and bottom margins / headers footers.
Left-click the margin tab located on the ruler on the left side of the screen. While still holding the mouse drag the margin tab down towards the bottom of the page. This will push the footer lower.
Click or tap where you want to start a new page without the header or footer. Go to Layout Breaks Next Page to create a section break. Double-click the header or footer area (near the top or bottom of the page) to open the Header Footer tab.

Re: I NEED TO COMPLETELY GET RID OF THE SPACE ALLOCATED TO HEADERS AND FOOTERS. On the Page Layout tab of the ribbon, in the Page Setup group, click Margins Custom Margins Set Top, Header, Bottom and Footer to 0, then click OK.
