On Feb. 23, 1945, four days after the initial assault on the island of Iwo Jima, Marines took control of the high ground and planted a flag atop Mt. Suribachi. The flag raising didnt signal the end of the fight on Iwo Jima. It did motivate the Marines and corpsmen still flushing out an entrenched enemy force.
The elegant standard was presented in February 1776 to the Provincial Congress of South Carolina by Christopher Gadsden, a delegate to the Continental Congress who was that same month placed in command of South Carolinas military forces.
The words were written by the entertainer Harry McCarthy, with the melody taken from the song The Irish Jaunting Car. The songs title refers to the unofficial first flag of the Confederacy, the Bonnie Blue Flag.
The Bonnie Blue flag was a banner associated at various times with the Republic of Texas, the short-lived Republic of West Florida, and the Confederate States of America at the start of the American Civil War in 1861. It consists of a single, five-pointed white star on a blue field.
On a mast with spreaders, the courtesy flag (or Q) should be flown at the starboard spreader. If the yacht has more than one mast, the courtesy flag should be flown from the starboard spreader of the forward mast. On a yacht without any mast, the courtesy flag (or Q) should be flown at the bow.
The Bonnie Blue Flag is also referred to as the flag of secession, as it was used before the Civil War by citizens who believed in secession. In 1861 Harry Macarthy wrote The Bonnie Blue Flag, a song that he performed before a packed house in New Orleans.
The Texas Flag Code assigns the following symbolism to the colors of the Texas flag: blue stands for loyalty, white for purity, and red for bravery. The code also states that the single (lone) star represents ALL of Texas and stands for our unity as one for God, State, and Country.
A flag consisting of a blue field with a large central gold star was adopted by the first Texas Congress, December 10, 1836. The design was suggested by President David G. Burnet and it is sometimes called the Burnet flag. It was the flag of the Republic from 1836-1839.
