Prisoners premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on August 30, 2013, and was released to theaters on September 20, 2013. The film was a financial and critical success, grossing $122 million worldwide against a production budget of $46 million, and receiving generally positive reviews from critics.
Spending per prisoner varies more than tenfold across states, from just under $23,000 per person in Arkansas to $307,468 in Massachusetts. Spending in Massachusetts was more than double any other state; the median state spent $64,865 per prisoner for the year.
Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, New Mexico, and Tennes- see rely considerably on private prisons for housing sen- tenced people. In these states, between 20% and 39% of the prison population resides in a for-profit prison (See Table 1).
But the Oregon Department of Corrections, with a budget over $1 billion a year, is not tracking the scope of the problems within prisons or able to provide the public and families of inmates meaningful information about some prison conditions, a Capital Chronicle investigation has found.
You can also see related research on our Poverty and Debt page. Key Statistics: Total U.S. government expenses on public prisons and jails: $80.7 billion + On private prisons and jails: $3.9 billion +
The trust fund is comprised of an available balance, a mandatory savings account and an interest bearing savings account. Inmate accounts are limited to holding $99,999,999.99. The canteen operations for the ODOC are managed using the offender banking system.
