Acceptable specimens for the Pap Test include cervical, cervical and vaginal, endocervical, vaginal and/or vulvar scrapings or brushings.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
A Pap test result can be normal, unclear, abnormal, or unsatisfactory. A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. It is common for test results to come back unclear. An abnormal result means that cell changes were found on your cervix.
Pap smears are a lifesaving screening tool for cervical cancer. The test can detect abnormal cells in the cervix before they become cancerous. Healthcare providers often perform HPV tests during Pap tests to check for HPV, one of the leading causes of cervical cancer.

Vaginal smears are obtained by scraping the middle or posterior 1/3 of the lateral vaginal wall; cervical by scraping the circumference of the cervical os and endocervical by brushing, scraping, or aspirating the endocervical canal.
