On the Data menu, click Show Data Sources to open the Data Sources window. Click Add New Data Source, and complete the Data Source Configuration wizard. Open the WPF designer, and make sure that the designer contains a container that is a valid drop target for the items in the Data Sources window.
A ControlTemplate is intended to be a self-contained unit of implementation detail that is invisible to outside users and objects, including styles. The only way to manipulate the content of the control template is from within the same control template.
Control templates are a lot more involved than a style. This is because the control template rewrites the visual appearance of the entire control, while a style simply applies property changes to the existing control. However, since the template of a control is applied by setting the Control.
There are two approaches to creating custom controls in XAML: user controls and templated controls. User controls are an easy, designer-friendly approach to creating a reusable layout. Templated controls offer a flexible layout with a customizable API for developers.
Data binding is the process that establishes a connection between the app UI and the data it displays. If the binding has the correct settings and the data provides the proper notifications, when the data changes its value, the elements that are bound to the data reflect changes automatically.
DataTemplate is about the presentation of data and is one of the many features provided by the WPF styling and templating model. For an introduction of the WPF styling and templating model, such as how to use a Style to set properties on controls, see the Styling and Templating topic.
In relational database programming, a data template is similar to a table, where data template fields are like columns in that table. Each data template inherits its sections and fields from its base templates and Sitecore combines the sections and fields in the data template and all its base templates.
A DataTemplate , therefore, is used to provide visual structure for underlying data, while a ControlTemplate has nothing to do with underlying data and simply provides visual layout for the control itself.
