What is DITA? Weamp;#39;ve talked about structured content in other videos, but the important thing to understand is that structured content is content that conforms to a predetermined standard. Content that conforms to a predetermined standard is intelligible for applications and systems. Now, DITA is a unique kind of structured content. DITA was designed specifically for optimizing the publishing of technical documentation. Weamp;#39;ll come back to that, but first, itamp;#39;s good to know *how* DITA is different. Most systems organize and manage content as documents or pages. These documents are written in a linear way. The ideas within these documents intertwine and overlap. DITA content is written AND organized differently. DITA content is written as component parts, topics, which are arranged in maps, and ideally stored in a Component Content Management System. The language reference portion of the DITA specification contains a topic for each DITA element. The topic defines the element, its inheritance hierarchy, and provides examples of usage. This portion of the DITA specification also includes information about DITA attributes.
The element lets you create any sequence of topics, and the ditabase document type lets you nest these topic types inside each other. The element has no particular output implications; it simply allows you to create multiple topics of different types at the same level in a single document.
The DITA Specification 1.3 provides the following definition of Reference topics: Reference topics are specialized from topic. They contain the standard topic elements, including title, short descriptions or abstract, a prolog, a body, and related links.
The element represents a property within a DITA topic or map. While the element can be used directly to capture properties, it is particularly useful as a basis for specialization.
DITA is built on XML-based mark-up language. It allows for topic-based authoring. It follows structured authoring concepts. It separates content from formatting via the DITA style guide.
Information Types DITA provides three base topic types (concept, task, and reference), a number of extended topic types, and the capability to create new topic types through specialization.
Language Reference encompasses the wide range of dictionaries and AZ guides dedicated to the learning, use, and study of language.
