Both Track 1 and Track 2 contain enough basic information for processing payment card swipes. Most card readers will be able to read both Track 1 and Track 2 data, in case one of the tracks has become unreadable.
Track-1. Track-1 contains alphanumeric characters, recorded at 210 BPI at 7 bits per character. In case of a credit card, this track normally encodes the cardholders name, card number and card expiry date. Field separator and placeholder characters are also found on the track.
In the following example, the track 2 data follows the semicolon (;). The most important parts of the track data are the card number, card expiration year, and card expiration month. In this example, the card number is 4111111111111111, the expiration year is 16, and the expiration month is 12.
Track 2 was developed by the American Bankers Association (ABA) for on-line financial transactions. It is 75bpi with room for 40 5-bit numeric characters. Track 2 is encoded with a 5-bit scheme (4 data bits plus one parity bit.) To convert this data into ASCII, add 0x30 to each byte.
Also referred to as full track data or magnetic-stripe data. Data encoded in the magnetic stripe or chip used for authentication and/or authorization during payment transactions. Can be the magnetic-stripe image on a chip or the track data on the magnetic stripe.
These tracks contain the cardholders name and account number, the cards expiration date, a service code, and a card verification code. Credit cards primarily or exclusively use the first two tracks. The third track sometimes contains additional information such as a country code or currency code.
Track two in the magnetic stripe of a credit or debit card stores very similar information to track one with several important differences. Track two only stores numeric code, whereas track one stores alphanumeric code. This means track two cannot store information containing letters, only numbers.
Track 2 is most often read by ATMs and credit card swipe readers. This track holds 40 characters of info. is no longer used for its original financial purposes.
