What is the Tack Weld Symbol? There is no official tack weld symbol, but the spot weld symbol (a circle) can be used instead and placed above, below, or on the reference line to show tack welds.
Ideal for precise work and for small projects, tack welds are typically placed at small intervals along the work pieces. This spacing, typically 25-30mm (approximately one inch), should be enough to hold the metal pieces in place, but small enough to remain inconspicuous in the final weld.

Tack welds are small and temporary welds used to hold parts together before a final weld occurs. Tack welds help keep the right alignment and distance between the parts that are being fused together.
Tack weld length generally varies from inches to inches or a minimum length of 4 mm. In general, a tack weld should be one inch in length. The thickness should be at most twenty metal thicknesses apart.
The minimum length of tack welds shall be 50 mm (2 inches) for incorporated tack welds. The reason for having a minimum of 2 inches as a smaller tack weld will not provide sufficient heat into the base metal thus there is a high propensity for lack of fusion issues.
The primary purpose of standard tack welding is to hold two pieces of metal in the correct position and should not be visible after the final welding. Tack welds are placed within the weld joint; if sized correctly, they will disappear into the final weld.
As per ASME Sec VIII-Div-1, UW-31(c), tack welders need to be qualified.
