Brackets and full stops seem to be a constant issue when Im proofreading. Put the full stop INSIDE the brackets when the words in brackets make a full sentence. Put the full stop OUTSIDE the brackets when the words in brackets are part of a sentence.
When joining three or more items in a list, use commas to distinguish the words, phrases, or clauses in the series. Be sure to use an Oxford comma before the conjunction. Example: I need to purchase peaches, strawberries, tomatoes, and cucumbers at the farmers market.
Use commas to separate independent clauses when they are joined by any of these seven coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet. Example: I love vanilla ice cream, but my brother prefers chocolate. Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause.
Always place periods outside closing brackets unless the entire sentence is parenthetical, in which case the period goes inside. Only use a comma after a closing bracket at the end of a clause.
Here are the rules for using bracketing commas: Use a pair of bracketing commas to set off a weak interruption which could be removed from the sentence without destroying it. If the interruption comes at the beginning or the end of the sentence, use only one bracketing comma.
Bracketing commas are used to mark additional information in a sentence. For example: These studies, in spite of their shared focus on locality, approach the topic from contrasting perspectives. You can check you have used these commas correctly by removing the bracketed section from the sentence.
Always place full stops outside closing brackets unless the entire sentence is parenthetical, in which case the full stop goes inside. Only use a comma after a closing bracket at the end of a clause. Use question marks and exclamation points inside brackets as required.
Etc. is used to indicate that only some of the items from a list have been used. Generally, in American English, if etc. is used in the middle of a sentence, it is followed by a comma.
