TIFF is an image file format. In this document, a file is defined to be a sequence of 8-bit bytes, where the bytes are numbered from 0 to N. The largest possible TIFF file is 2**32 bytes in length. A TIFF file begins with an 8-byte image file header that points to an image file directory (IFD).
No, they are essentially the same file type; the only difference is that one acronym (TIF) is short for the other acronym (TIFF). So regardless of which acronym you use, both refer to the same image format. The two acronyms are used interchangeably, so theres no need to worry about which one youre using.
A TIFF, which stands for Tag Image File Format, is a computer file used to store raster graphics and image information. A favourite among photographers, TIFFs are a handy way to store high-quality images before editing if you want to avoid lossy file formats.
A TIFF file begins with an 8-byte image file header that points to an image file directory (IFD). An image file directory contains information about the image, as well as pointers to the actual image data. The following paragraphs describe the image file header and IFD in more detail.
TIFF 16 bit is 16 bits per channel. JPEG is 8 bits per channel. So: 16 x 3 = 48 bit.
TIFF is a flexible, adaptable file format for handling images and data within a single file, by including the header tags (size, definition, image-data arrangement, applied image compression) defining the images geometry.
The TIFF specification defines a framework for an Image File Header (IFH), Image File Directories (IFDs), and associated bitmaps. Each IFD and its associated bitmap are sometimes called a TIFF subfile. There is no limit to the number of subfiles a TIFF image file may contain.
