Tack welds are small and temporary welds that hold parts together ready for final welding. Using tack welds mean that fixtures may not be required to hold parts together to create a finished weld. Tack welds maintain the desired alignment and gap between the pieces of metal being joined.
The primary purpose of standard tack welding is to hold two pieces of metal in the correct position and should not be visible after the final welding. Tack welds are placed within the weld joint; if sized correctly, they will disappear into the final weld. Tack welding is all about striking the right balance.
These defects must be removed before making the final weld. Tack welds may be long or short. Some fitup operations require 12 long tacks fully fused into the root of the weld. I have seen some tacks cover more than half the length of the root.
For ASME fabrication, tack welds are addressed by the fabrication (book) sections of the Code thusly. For tack welds to left in place, the welders must be qualified per Section IX, i.e. per QW-303.1 by groove weld testing (or for fillet welds only by fillet weld testing QW-303.2).

The tack weld is created by creating small, dot-like welds along the joints length. Theyre designed to temporarily hold metal parts in place. The number of tack welds required will depend on the geometry, measurements, material thickness and type of metal used.

All tack welds must be thoroughly cleaned before proceeding with the final weld. Both ends of each tack weld, representing start and stop (which are weak points often having unacceptable defects), must be ground to remove possible flaws and to present a very gradual slope that blends the welds sides into the metal.
