Grizzly Bear member Daniel Rossen, an L.A. native born a decade and a half after “Smile” was originally scheduled to be released in 1967, was in college when “I fell in love with it as a piece of music, even though I didn't know quite what it was supposed to be.”
Some of these songs sound so close to being complete, if not basically complete. I don't listen to Vega Tables thinking “this is definitely an unfinished song”, at most it sounds 95% complete, the same with Good Vibrations, Our Prayer, Gee and Heroes and Villains (not as much as the others but still close) imo.
Pet Sounds redefined what pop music was and more importantly, showed what it could aspire to be; that there should be no barriers or limits to musical self-expression. As soon as it was released, it fuelled The Beatles' ambition to reach new creative heights in the recording studio.
"Smile" was recorded in 1966 and 1967 with the help of Van Dyke Parks who, ing to Priore, brought a "more socially conscious, politically oriented lyric" to the traditional Beach Boys sound. The lyrics, however, were not without controversy.
Listen to this article The creative genius behind The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson has long suffered from mental illness. He experienced a nervous breakdown in 1964 and resigned from touring, but stuck with the band to mastermind their greatest work, including Pet Sounds and the 'Good Vibrations' single.
'Smile' Was Meant To Be Very Experimental There's no solid beginning or ending for “Smile.” Recorded between 1966 and 1971, there are about 50 hours of tape featuring music recorded at studios like United Western Recorders, Gold Star Studios, Sunset Sound Recorders and CBS Columbia Square.
Conceived, recorded, and ultimately abandoned in 1966 and 1967, SMiLE was to be something like Brian Wilson's Sgt. Pepper's, his attempt to make the great art-pop album of the era. The original tapes were assembled for this official release, finally giving Wilson's epic story an ending.
But their protests paled next to the howls from rock fans on April 6, 1983, when Watt indirectly banned the Beach Boys from that year's July 4 concert on the Washington Mall.

Numerous issues, including legal entanglements with Capitol Records, Wilson's uncompromising perfectionism and mental instabilities, as well as Parks' withdrawal from the project in early 1967, prevented the album's completion and release.
