A JPEG file supports up to 24-bit color and uses lossy compression to compress images for more convenient storage and sending.
JPEG compression. JPEG uses a lossy form of compression based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT). This mathematical operation converts each frame/field of the video source from the spatial (2D) domain into the frequency domain (a.k.a. transform domain).
A JPEG file is a sequence of Type-Length-Value chunks called segments: \; marker:c; length(value+2):u2; value;length*c; the type is defined by a marker: 2 bytes, FF then a non-zero byte (*). the length is a big endian on 2 bytes, and covers the size itself.
The JPEG image file, commonly used for photographs and other complex still images on the web with no transparency, is generally compressed using lossy compression. Using JPEG compression, the creator can decide how much loss to introduce, and how much of a trade-off is acceptable between file size and image quality.
The amount of JPEG compression is typically measured as a percentage of the quality level. An image at 100% quality has (almost) no loss, and 1% quality is a very low quality image. In general, quality levels of 90% or higher are considered high quality, 80%-90% is medium quality, and 70%-80% is low quality.
Its the go-to file format for digital images and it has been ever since photographers began snapping and storing images on digital cameras and other reprographic devices. JPEG images group together the following filename extensions: . jpg.
