Tack welding is a fundamental skill and a staple in the welders arsenal, used in almost all welding jobs particularly in manufacturing complex joints and parts. The tack weld is created by creating small, dot-like welds along the joints length. Theyre designed to temporarily hold metal parts in place.
Tack welds are small and temporary welds that hold parts together ready for final welding. Using tack welds mean that fixtures may not be required to hold parts together to create a finished weld.
For ASME fabrication, tack welds are addressed by the fabrication (book) sections of the Code thusly. For tack welds to left in place, the welders must be qualified per Section IX, i.e. per QW-303.1 by groove weld testing (or for fillet welds only by fillet weld testing QW-303.2).
Tack welding takes place before the actual final welds are completed, including any spot welding. Tack welding is a temporary process that ensures that any parts to be welded are held securely and properly aligned, while spot welding finally joins the parts together.
You tack weld using the same method as youll use for the final bead. However, instead of welding several inches, you would add a few small 1/4 to 1/2-inch long tacks along the workpiece to stabilize it. Tacking, as its often called, keeps the parts of a weldment in correct alignment while the welding occurs.
Weakened Joints: Tack welds are generally smaller and less robust than final welds, so they contribute less to the overall strength of the joint. Poor filler metal can only create weak spots inside the welds and weaken the joints.
