Tack welding takes place before the actual final welds are completed, including any spot welding. Tack welding is a temporary process that ensures that any parts to be welded are held securely and properly aligned, while spot welding finally joins the parts together.
Tacking is used for a variety of reasons, such as holding a seam in place until it is sewn properly, or transferring pattern markings onto the garment. Tacking is typically sewn using a specialised tacking thread, which may snap easily in order for it to be easily removed from the garment when necessary.
Tack welds of the fillet type may be qualified by a groove weld test or fillet weld test in full compliance with the requirements of Section IX.
For ASME fabrication, tack welds are addressed by the fabrication (book) sections of the Code thusly. For tack welds to left in place, the welders must be qualified per Section IX, i.e. per QW-303.1 by groove weld testing (or for fillet welds only by fillet weld testing QW-303.2).
The qualifications to get a job as a tack welder include earning a certificate or degree in welding and, in many cases, completing an apprenticeship. This role is more common among people who are just starting their career as a welder.
It makes welding easier by keeping workpieces from shifting during the final welding process. Tack welding maintains design alignments and sheet bonding distances until the final welding process. It eliminates the need for fixtures and clamps and is suited for low-volume industrial manufacturing.
The strength of tack welds, like other welds, is proportional to the throat size, and the length. Thus, a stronger tack weld may be made by making it with a larger throat, or longer length, or both.
Tack Welding Process During the process, small tack welds are usually placed throughout the two joining metals to properly fit and prepare them pre-weld. Fit-up (the step between producing the parts needed for a weld and welding them) and tack-up (the application of the weld) are keys to a quality weldment.
