An ITI course in welding typically covers the basics of welding technology, safety measures and practical training in different welding processes. The course duration ranges from one to two years and requires a minimum qualification of 8th or 10th class, depending on the institute.
Ideal for precise work and for small projects, tack welds are typically placed at small intervals along the work pieces. This spacing, typically 25-30mm (approximately one inch), should be enough to hold the metal pieces in place, but small enough to remain inconspicuous in the final weld.
For ASME fabrication, tack welds are addressed by the fabrication (book) sections of the Code thusly. For tack welds to left in place, the welders must be qualified per Section IX, i.e. per QW-303.1 by groove weld testing (or for fillet welds only by fillet weld testing QW-303.2).
The primary purpose of standard tack welding is to hold two pieces of metal in the correct position and should not be visible after the final welding. Tack welds are placed within the weld joint; if sized correctly, they will disappear into the final weld. Tack welding is all about striking the right balance.
When bridge tack welding, the engineer must apply small tacks on each component alternately so that each side has time to cool down before re-tacking. Bridge tack welding can be challenging, as its easy to apply excess heat in the process, which can widen the gap on the opposite side of the joint.
Tack welds of the fillet type may be qualified by a groove weld test or fillet weld test in full compliance with the requirements of Section IX.
The qualifications to get a job as a tack welder include earning a certificate or degree in welding and, in many cases, completing an apprenticeship. This role is more common among people who are just starting their career as a welder.
Tack welds are used to hold two metal pieces in place ready for final welding, just as a tailor may use pins to hold two pieces of material together before sewing. These welds make sure the workpieces are correctly and rigidly aligned, reinforcing or even eliminating the use of fixtures.
