Day-to-day items like a halter and lead rope, grooming brushes, and an equine first aid kit are just a few of the essential products youll need for your horses regular care. You also need to budget for riding clothes like boots, a helmet, jeans or breeches, as well as tack, such as a bridle, saddle, polos, etc.
While there are many different types of tack to choose from, there are a few items that are considered must-haves for any western rider. These include a saddle, reins, spurs (optional), a breast collar, a cinch, a back cinch (optional), a crupper (optional), a headstall and bit, a saddle pad, and a girth.
Here are some gear selections Ive made over the years, including tapaderos/rider footwear, reins, halters/lead ropes, saddle pads, saddlebags, spurs, shoeing, and breastcollars/cruppers.
Tack is equipment or accessories equipped on horses and other equines in the course of their use as domesticated animals. This equipment includes such items as saddles, stirrups, bridles, halters, reins, bits, and harnesses.
Contents 2.1 Halters. 2.2 Bridles. 2.3 Hackamores and other bitless designs. 2.4 Other headgear.
Tack applies more to items you need to actually ride, including a horse saddle rack, bridle, bit, stirrups, reins, cinch, blanket/saddle pad, spurs, etc. Gear, on the other hand, usually refers to the items you need to keep your horse comfortable and groomed, such as brushes, feed buckets, etc.
Tack. Whether or not you plan to ride, show, trail ride, or ride for pleasure at home, your horse will need various types of tack. Your discipline and your horses level of training will dictate which type of saddle, bridle, pad, stirrups, girth, and boots you use.
Western bridles usually do not have cavessons or nosebands, and use only one bit and one set of reins. Western reins may either be open (also called split), closed (also called California), or roping style reins. Bits commonly come in two types: snaffle and curb.
