How to fix the trackpad on your MacBook Check System Settings. If youve misconfigured your Mac trackpad, it isnt surprising that it stopped working. Disable Force Click. Reset Trackpad. Reset NVRAM or PRAM. Reset the SMC. Run Apple Diagnostics. Update your MacBook. Run Maintenance Scripts.
The most common cause of a stuck trackpad is a bloated battery. It presses on the other side of the trackpad and prevents it from moving. The second most common cause is damage to the motherboard, namely liquid ingress. Its better if its water, and worse if its coffee, cola, or whiskey.
To uncover and eliminate the issue thats causing the MacBook cursor erratic behavior, you need to complete a thorough checkup. Reset all pointing devices. Check your Mac for malware. Turn off Tap to Click. Keep your trackpad clean. Restart your Mac in safe mode. Repair disk permissions. Reconfigure SMC, NVRAM, and PRAM.
Try cleaning it with a soft cloth. Dont use any cleaning fluid or water, just the cloth. That will be enough to remove any grease or dirt that could be causing a problem. If cleaning the trackpad didnt help fix the trackpad, you should contact Apple or an Authorized Service Center so it can be repaired.
Press down and hold these 4 buttons together for about 8 or more seconds: Option, Power, Shift and Control. Your SMC will be reset and your trackpad fixed.
