Clean water troughs often: You should clean troughs about once a week by emptying all water from the tank and scrubbing it clean, making sure to scrape off any dirt, debris or algae. Then rinse the trough with a 10 percent bleach solution and rinse twice more with regular water.
Some horse owners will add a drop or two of bleach to a waterer to keep drinking water free of algae. Because bleach contains chlorine, it can help sanitize the water. The chlorine in bleach is the same additive used in public water systems.
Blue-green algae toxicity in horses occurs when horses ingest stagnant water, or affected pond water, with concentrations of a specific type of blue-green algae. Blue-green algae toxicity in horses can be fatal.
Moving troughs in shaded areas or reducing the amount of direct sunlight will reduce algae growth, which need sunlight to survive and multiply. Its also a good practice to monitor water pH, salinity and temperature. Keeping those parameters in control can greatly reduce algae bloom.
Thats because some toxic substances dont smell or taste very dangerous. A good example is a water contaminated with blue-green algae. Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, can cause the water to become highly poisonous to the horse drinking even a few ounces can require a visit to the vet.
4) Stock Tank Heater Materials Of these, only cast aluminum heaters are safe to use in plastic or fiberglass tanks without a guard. Heating units made with the other metals risk melting plastic tanks unless they are surrounded by a guard (which may need to be purchased separately).
Dirt, manure, feed droppings and algae can all contaminate tank water. In small amounts, algae can turn the water green and produce a bad odor, which may reduce how much water your horse drinks. In larger amounts, algae can make your horse sick.
Toxins produced by the algae are harmful to animals drinking the contaminated water. Microsystin, one of the toxins, affects the gastrointestinal tract, causing colic and diarrhea in horses.
To thoroughly clean a water trough: Empty it completely and remove all debris. Rinse the tank twice with a 10% bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water, or about 1.5 cups bleach in 1 gallon of water). Let the bleach solution contact the tank surfaces for 15 min. Rinse the tank twice more with clean water.
