A circulation issue or circulation coin, sometimes called a business strike (US), is a coin minted and issued for commerce as opposed to those made as commemorative coins and proof coins.
The strike type of a coin refers to the particular minting process that was used to strike a planchet into a coin. There are three basic strike types: Circulation Strike, Proof Strike, and Special Mint Strike (SMS).
Circulating, uncirculated, and bullion coins are struck once. Proof coins are struck at least twice. The circulating coin presses strike coins faster than the presses used for uncirculated, proof, and bullion coins. Once the press strikes the coins, they drop into either a bin or a tray.
PCGS FirstStrike The PCGS First Strike program designates coins issued in the first 30* days of the Mints release. This designation not only adds value to modern coins, but takes modern coin collecting to another level with multiple Mint releases each year.
Both prooflike business strikes and proofs will usually have some hairlines. However, business strikes are far more likely to have bagmarks as well as hairlines. Strike - Proofs tend to be somewhat sharper than business strikes. In fact, most proofs are fully struck.
Proof coins are the highest quality commemorative coins. Their sharpness, detail and finish are unrivalled, making them perfect for collectors looking for highest levels of craftsmanship and detail. The dies used to strike Proof coins are hand-finished to ensure that all imperfections are removed.
Striking a coin refers to pressing an image into the blank metal disc, or planchet, and is a term descended from the days when the dies were struck with hammers to deform the metal into the image of the dies.
The business strike, sometimes called the circulation strike, refers to coins produced with the intent that they will circulate in everyday commerce (as opposed to a proof coin specially made for collectors).
