PCGS FirstStrike The PCGS First Strike program designates coins issued in the first 30* days of the Mints release. This designation not only adds value to modern coins, but takes modern coin collecting to another level with multiple Mint releases each year.
A circulation issue or circulation coin, sometimes called a business strike (US), is a coin minted and issued for commerce as opposed to those made as commemorative coins and proof coins.
The strike type of a coin refers to the particular minting process that was used to strike a planchet into a coin. There are three basic strike types: Circulation Strike, Proof Strike, and Special Mint Strike (SMS).
To identify this strike designation, you only have to look at the band in the middle of the sticks. If the splitting is fully visible at that band, the other bands will be fully struck as well. The rarest dates to find full bands are on the 1918-D, 1918-S, 1919-D, 1919-S, 1920-D, 1926-S, 1927-D, and 1945 Mercury Dimes.
In reality, First Strike and Early Release are hyperbolic terms intended to cause investors to think that uncirculated bullion coins have greater value than they actually do. It is a marketing ploy, like a laundry detergent being new and improved. Investors thinking of buying gold are forewarned.
First strike is a marketing term used by third party coin grading services which refers to coins which were struck first by a mint. The U.S. Mint maintains that there is no widely accepted and standardized numismatic industry definition of First Strike coins.
Striking a coin refers to pressing an image into the blank metal disc, or planchet, and is a term descended from the days when the dies were struck with hammers to deform the metal into the image of the dies.
A special mint set strike usually has one or more of the following characteristics: Special handling of the blanks and planchets. Special preparation of the coining die. Special handling of the finished coin to minimize scratches and imperfections.
Coins are struck differently depending on their finish. Circulating, uncirculated, and bullion coins are struck once. Proof coins are struck at least twice. The circulating coin presses strike coins faster than the presses used for uncirculated, proof, and bullion coins.
The Mint has several different kinds of presses, but they all work the same way. The press forces the obverse and reverse dies together against the planchet to strike both sides of the coin at once. Circulating coin presses use from 35 to 100 metric tons of pressure to strike the coins, depending on the denomination.
