Postal workers are taking industrial action in a dispute over pay in what is described as the summers biggest strike so far. The news follows the CWUs ballot for strike action, which saw members vote by 97.6% on a 77% turnout to take action for a dignified, proper pay rise.
Postal union lobbying of Congress to obtain higher pay and better working conditions had proven fruitless. An immediate trigger for the strike was a Congressional decision to raise the wages of postal workers by only 4%, at the same time as Congress raised its own pay by 41%.
The first mass work stoppage in the 195-year history of the Postal Service began on March 18, 1970, with a walkout of letter carriers in Brooklyn and Manhattan who were demanding better wages. Ultimately, 210,000 (in 30 cities) of the nations 750,000 postal employees participated in the wildcat strike.
By 1970, full-time employees started out at $6,176 ($34,641 in 2010 dollars). After 21 years of hard work, they averaged only $8,442 ($47,351 in 2010 dollars).
To answer the question, when are the next postal strikes? , there are no strike dates planned for January 2023. However, the CWU has warned, further action will take place in 2023. Members are expected to ballot on the prospect of new strikes which will affect Royal Mail services.
We are prohibited by law and by the Union contract from striking. The last postal strike was in 1972, which forced the federal government to accept the postal unions and improve wages and benefits.
Union members can be disciplined by their union for crossing a picket line but unions may not discipline members if refusing to cross a picket line clearly violates the no-strike clause of the contract the covers the member in question. National Labor Relations Act Section 7 codified at 29 U.S.C.
All members in good standing are able to vote on whether or not to move forward and fight to have our voices heard. Do I need to picket on the strike day to support the strike? Yes, we need all SEIU-UHW members on the picket line to stand strong together.
