Five principal tones of a bell The Hum: The lowest of the five partials is called the hum. The hum can be heard after the intense strike tone dissipates and is the slowest overtone to decay. The Prime: An octave above the hum in the pitch of the strike tone is the prime.
The Physical: When a bell is struck by a clapper or hammer, the energy imparted causes complex vibrations at each part of a bells structure. Different frequencies across the shape of a bell send different pulses into the air.
The strike tone, strike note, or tap note, of a percussion instrument (e.g. bell, chime or gong) when struck, is the dominant note perceived immediately by the human ear. It is also known as the prime or fundamental note.
The biggest determinant is the overall size of the bell; the larger the bell, the lower and deeper the tone that will be produced. As such, the smaller the bell, the higher the tone.
When the clapper strikes, the bell begins to move quickly back and forth or vibrate and push the molecules in the air back and forth to form sound waves. Sound needs a medium to travel through, such as air which is made up of molecules that vibrate and conduct the sound.
The shape of the bell or leadpipe determines how much of the wave is reflected back inside, and consequently affects the strength of the resonance. A smaller bell reflects more energy into the instrument.
The sound of bells ringing, like church bells on a Sunday morning, can be called tintinnabulation. You can describe similar sounds that way, too like the telephones tintinnabulation or the tintinnabulation of your sisters silver bracelets tinkling together as she walks.
High notes have a high frequency and a high number of hertz; they have a lot of vibrations or many waves per second. Low notes have a low frequency and a low number of hertz. You will notice listening to the bells that the smaller the bell the higher the pitch and the larger the bell the lower the pitch.
The Federation Bells have a pitch range of four octaves, from D2 (two octaves below middle C) to D6 (two octaves above middle C). This corresponds to a frequency range from 73 Hertz (i.e. 73 sound wave cycles per second) up to 1172 Hertz.
