The inclination of rock beds to the horizontal plane is termed as dip. The strike of an inclined bed is the direction of any horizontal line along a bedding plane. The direction of dip is always at the right angle to the strike.
Strike and dip is a measurement convention used to describe the orientation, or attitude, of a planar geologic feature. A features strike is the azimuth of an imagined horizontal line across the plane, and its dip is the angle of inclination measured downward from horizontal.
Dip direction: The dip direction will be orthogonal to the strike direction. Water will flow down the plane in this direction. Dip: steepest angle from the horizontal of a plane. A horizontal plane has a dip of 0, and a vertical plane a dip of 90.
The strike and dip symbol is a T with the long horizontal bar representing the strike direction, and the small tick mark indicating the dip direction. The dip angle is written next to the tick mark. On a map, geologists use a strike and dip symbol to represent inclined beds (Figure 3).
Dip Azimuth. Azimuth of the True Dip direction relative to the survey orientation. Output ranges from -180 to 180 degrees. Positive azimuth is defined from the inline in the direction of increasing crossline numbers. Azimuth = 0 indicates that the dip is dipping in the direction of increasing crossline numbers.
The azimuth of the dip that is, the projection of the dip onto the horizontal is known as the dip di- rection or dip azimuth. The true dip direction is always 90 from the strike. The most convenient way to think of the strike line is to imagine the plane half-sub- merged in a body of water.
Strike refers to the line formed by the intersection of a horizontal plane and an inclined surface. Dip is the angle between that horizontal plane (such as the top of this block) and the tilted surface (the geologic contact between the tilted layers).
The line of a bed (for example bedding of sedimentary rocks), fault (for example oblique-slip fault), or other planar feature that intersects with a horizontal plane is known as a strike line and the entire concept is known as a strike.
