Hello, Im Rebecca Gumbrell-McCormick, senior lecturer in the Department of Management at Birkbeck College. Im here today to talk about whats behind the UKs current wave of strikes. You may think theres an awful lot of strikes at the moment, but historically speaking thats not the case. The highest level of strikes in this country was in the General Strike of 1926, and even in 1979, the so-called winter of discontent there were 30 million days lost. So far this year there have been 300 disputes, we dont know yet the total number of days lost. So why strike now? Does this mean that the trade unions are growing in importance? Yes, to some degree it does. Trade union membership is recovering from a long decline from its peak of 13.2 million in 1979 to 6.56 million today, and over the last four years its been going up by about a hundred thousand a year. This is largely due to an increase in the number of women joining. So women are now the majority of trad
