Narrator: On August 19, 2004, an explosion at the Sterigenics International Facility in Ontario, California injured four workers and caused extensive damage to the 66,000 square foot facility. The blast occurred when ethylene oxide gas, used in the sterilization process, ignited and exploded. The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board investigated the accident. Bresland: This was an incident involving a chemical that is both highly flammable and toxic to humans. It is fortunate that no one was in the immediate vicinity of the explosion, because it was likely there would have been more serious injuries and possibly fatalities.
