The doctors were protesting against the proposed amendments to the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments Act.
Tommy Douglas was a Saskatchewan politician best known as the Father of Medicare. During his tenure as the provinces Premier, he introduced the universal health insurance system that would eventually be adopted across Canada.
The strike produced a stalemate between the provincial government and the doctors, which was only resolved through a negotiated compromise known as the Saskatoon Agreement.

The Saskatchewan doctors strike was a 23-day labour action exercised by medical doctors in 1962 in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan in an attempt to force the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation government of Saskatchewan to drop its program of universal medical insurance.
