The WGA demanded increased minimum compensation in all areas of media, increased residuals, appropriate TV series-writing compensation from pre- to postproduction, increased contributions to pension and health plans, the strengthening of professional standards and the overall protections for writers, and more.
WGA members voted overwhelmingly in favor of a new contract that ended a 148-day strike that roiled the film and TV industry and caused thousands of job losses.
The WGA filed a strike termination two days later, on February 11, and the next day, the writers voted to end the strike. The WGA then ratified the new contract two weeks later, on February 26. Members could reject the deal, but its very unlikely.
In simple terms, a writers strike means that a subset of the members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), the labor union to which most working writers in Hollywood belong, will stop working until the WGA docHubes an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
Writers began the strike on May 2, demanding higher royalties, mandatory staffing of TV writing rooms and safeguards to their jobs from the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Another demand was for residual payments when a show becomes a hit.
The Writers Guild stated that writers cannot do any writing, revising, pitching, or discussing future projects with companies that are members of the AMPTP. The Writers Guild also stated that fiction podcasts that are produced by companies against which the Guild and its members are striking must stop production.
Restrictions on WGA Signatories Your company must only hire writers who are members of the WGA. Your company may not hire any writers who are not WGA members. Your company must not pay writers less than the minimum compensation under the WGA Basic Agreement.
The strike officially ended in the wee hours of Wednesday, September 27, after 148 days, and the unions membership will begin their vote on Monday, October 2. For many, this moment is one for celebration.
