What about non-union writing projects? No, a writer cannot write for a non-union project. Handel said that regardless of whether theres a strike, a member of the Writers Guild of America cannot provide services for a non-union project.
But if a writer is not already a member of the WGA, the same rules apply. Regardless of whether a non-WGA writer honors the picket lines, a non-WGA writer still cannot work as a writer for a WGA signatory company. So non-WGA writers are barred from work either way.
The basic rule from the WGA is that writers must immediately stop providing writing services for any and all companies that are part of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. If writers have covered projects in the works, they cant continue working on them or complete them.
Restrictions on WGA Signatories Your company must only hire writers who are members of the WGA. Your company may not hire any writers who are not WGA members. Your company must not pay writers less than the minimum compensation under the WGA Basic Agreement.
Are animated projects automatically covered by the WGA and Working Rule 8? No. Animation writing can be covered by either the WGA or the IATSE Local 839. As a result, writers can insist that their animated projects be WGA but the WGA cant require them to get their work covered, it must be voluntary.
WGA Members cannot attend meetings or engage in conversations as a writer with any struck companies concerning new, pending, or future projects/writing assignments with producers. WGA Members may not write for any non-union writing projects or non-signatory foreign producers.
If you work for a non-signatory company, the Guild cannot guarantee you the protections afforded under the MBA. In fact, if you are a WGA member, it is a violation of the Guilds Working Rules if you perform services for a company or sell literary material to a company that is not signatory to the MBA.
