The strike () and dip () angles are shown.
Strike and dip are generally written as strike/dip or dip direction, dip, with the degree symbol typically omitted.
On a map, geologists use a strike and dip symbol to represent inclined beds (Figure 3). Strike and dip map symbols look like the capital letter T, with a short trunk and extra-wide top line. The short trunk represents the dip and the top line represents the strike.
Strike indicates the attitude or position of linear structural features such as faults, beds, joints, and folds. Trend is the direction of the line formed by the intersection of the planar feature with the ground surface; trend is the same as strike only if the ground surface is parallel to the horizontal plane.
Strike refers to the line formed by the intersection of a horizontal plane and an inclined surface. Dip is the angle between that horizontal plane (such as the top of this block) and the tilted surface (the geologic contact between the tilted layers).

Dip and strike indicate the orientation of a plane at a specific location. Dips and strikes of folded strata will tend to show systematic changes at different locations. In the example below the fold axis is horizontal and axial plane vertical.
