Often the pain experienced during a gynecology checkup occurs when your doctor inserts the speculum. A speculum is the medical tool that helps your doctor gently open the vaginal canal and see inside (you may know it by the tell-tale clicking sound).
An optimal and fully satisfactory specimen will contain 15,000 or more well-preserved and well-visualized squamous cells spread over 10% or more of the slide surface, and a minimum of 2 clusters with at least 5 squamous metaplasia cells to demonstrate that the squamocolumnar junction has been adequately sampled.
Occasionally a sample may be called inadequate. This may be due to a technical problem, for example, if the laboratory cannot get an HPV test result from your sample or cannot see if abnormal cells are present or not. If you have an inadequate test, we will ask you to have cervical screening again in 3 months time.
Acceptable specimens for the Pap Test include cervical, cervical and vaginal, endocervical, vaginal and/or vulvar scrapings or brushings. Specimens may be submitted as conventional smears, although the preferred method is the ThinPrep Pap test.
Screening interval age 2565. Screen with primary HPV test every 5 years. If primary HPV testing is not available, screening may be done with either a co-test that combines an HPV test with a Pap test every 5 years or a Pap test alone every 3 years.
Specimen adequacy This tells you whether the test was successful. To get reliable results, your test must include two clusters of cells with at least five cells in each cluster. If there was difficulty in getting a specimen during your exam, you might see that the specimen was inadequate.
A Pap smear is a procedure that involves collecting cells from the cervix for testing. It also is called a Pap test. Healthcare professionals sometimes call it cervical cytology.
