In 1994, a Denso Wave employee named Masahiro Hara conjured up the idea of QR codes while playing the game Go. If youve never played Go before, it consists of a 1919 grid with black and white stones placed throughout. One glance at a Go board will make you see the connection between QR.
QR codes (or Quick Response codes) are two-dimensional codes that you can scan with a smartphone. The code contains information, usually a site address, and once you scan it, the code connects you with a resource on the web.
With a no-printer return, the customer gets a QR code that contains all the necessary shipment details. Then the customer can simply present the QR code on their smartphone to the shipping carrier or drop-off location.
A malicious QR code may lead you to a spoofed website designed to drop different malware types or steal your sensitive data, like your login credentials, credit card information, or money. In one incident, cybercriminals were using parking meter QR codes to steal money through phishing websites.
The 60-second ad featured a floating and colorful QR code bouncing around the screen, similar to a bouncing DVD logo. The QR code directed people to a link offering $15 in Bitcoin to those who sign up for a Coinbase account before February 15. The ad proved so popular that the app crashed for about an hour.
When you hold your cellphones camera or a QR code-reader up to the square, youll be able to open a webpage in your browser. If you werent fast enough to scan the code or missed the full blue screen that temporarily appeared after the QR code went away the bouncing, colorful QR code was an ad for Coinbase.
Coinbases 60-second ad spot in 2022 showcased a colorful QR Code bouncing around the screen. The Coinbase App ended up crashing temporarily due to the high levels of traffic from the ad.
Fraud or malicious QR codes are ones that have been tampered with or replaced by cybercriminals. This makes them unsuspecting to regular people, making them seem like legitimate QR codes. To make it even trickier, these codes are hidden in plain sight or in areas where theyre usually found.
