One of the primary reasons why a wedding photographer might choose aperture priority is to control the depth of field. By setting a low aperture, they can control how much of the scene is in focus, creating a shallow depth of field. Alternatively, they can increase the aperture for a sharp focus throughout the image.
Pick the Right Aperture If were shooting a larger bridal party grouping (of about 8-10 people), and theyre all on the same focal plane, then well bump our aperture up a full stop to f/4.0. If that makes you uncomfortable, you can always go to f/5.6, but we like f/4.0.
If its just myself taking the photographs, I would normally suggest that I am at the front of the ceremony so I see the bride walking down the aisle and I can also take photographs of your sweeter half waiting for you. I get both reactions and it makes for amazing and sometimes very emotional photographs.
Determining Aperture From there you can determine your aperture. Using a wide aperture, such as f/1.8 or f/2.8, can help to create a shallow depth of field, blurring the background and emphasizing the subject. This can be particularly effective when shooting portraits of both the bride and groom.
So as a rough guide, generally when you are dealing with moving subjects shutter speed might be a better mode to select. But when shutter speed isnt going to be a problem then you can select aperture priority.
Utilizing Shutter Speed In Wedding Photography For ceremonies, we recommend not going under 1/60 seconds to avoid getting a blurry image. For receptions, being that theres a good chance youll be using lighting, shooting between 1/200th to 1/60th will provide the best images.
They will also have more dynamic range so there is more scope to recover shadows or highlights. My preferred setting for general wedding shots is to pick f4 or 5.6, set my minimum shutter speed to 1/125 and ISO to auto.
A fast shutter speed is a good starting point for wedding photography because youll capture lots of movement. For starters, set the shutter speed to 1/200 or faster. Then try shutter priority mode to really freeze moments. Set the shutter speed to 1/500th of a second to capture active moments.
