A PET scan creates 3-D images of the body using radioactive tracers, typically administered via intravenous injection. These tracers consist of carrier molecules bonded to a radioactive atom known as an isotope. The specific carrier molecule used depends on the diagnostic purpose. For example, if cancer is suspected or being monitored, FDG, a modified glucose form, may be used, as it is absorbed by tissues and high absorption could indicate a cancerous tumor. The radiation from the tracers is minimal and quickly eliminated from the body. The isotope emits positrons that annihilate surrounding electrons, releasing two photons that travel in opposite directions.
