When the stock price moves to the strike price, the contract is at the money. At the money options have strike prices equal to the stock price. There is typically no reason to exercise an at-the-money option because it has no intrinsic value.
When the stock price equals the strike price, the option contract has zero intrinsic value and is at the money. Therefore, there is really no reason to exercise the contract when it can be bought in the market for the same price. The option contract is not exercised and expires worthless.
A strike price, also known as a grant price or exercise price, is the fixed cost that youll pay per share in order to exercise your stock options so you can own them.
For put options, the strike price is the price at which shares can be sold. For instance, one XYZ 50 call option would grant the owner the right to buy 100 shares of XYZ stock at $50, regardless of what the current market price is.
In finance, the strike price (or exercise price) of an option is a fixed price at which the owner of the option can buy (in the case of a call), or sell (in the case of a put), the underlying security or commodity.
The strike price of an option is the price at which a put or call option can be exercised. A relatively conservative investor might opt for a call option strike price at or below the stock price, while a trader with a high tolerance for risk may prefer a strike price above the stock price.
Strike price, on the other hand, is defined as the price at which an option can be exercised by its owner. For example, imagine that hypothetical stock XYZ is trading for $23.05/share in the market. The spot price of XYZ is therefore $23.05, which is an important reference point for the options market.
Strike price and exercise price are both terms for the price at which you can buy or sell an underlying security in options trading. Both refer to the security price you locked in when you purchased the option, and investors use both terms interchangeably.
