Employers do not need to pay anyone who is on strike. Employees who go on strike will not usually get their pay or other contractual benefits like pension contributions. In some circumstances, they might get money from their union. This is sometimes called strike pay.
The union representing academic workers in the University of California (UC) system called for UCLA and UC Davis members to strike starting Tuesday, May 28.
Nearly a third of the academic and graduate student workers of the University of California are on strike, after the union of 48,000 employees escalated its labor standoff by walking off the job at UCLA and UC Davis this morning.

Academic workers at UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz will go on strike next week, joining workers at three other UC campuses, the union representing the workers announced Friday. The strike is escalating at a pivotal point of the spring quarter at the six campuses.
