The straightforward approach is to keep your basic business operations going. Even if every employee is going on strike at work, you cant employ agency workers to cover the striking positions. What you can do is move current employees into required roles to cover the work of those on strike.
Should you work during the strike? That is a personal decision and none of the Foundations business. Under the National Labor Relations Act you have a right to strike as well as a right not to strike. If the employer continues to operate during the strike, you need to decide what to do based on your own needs.
Once youre on strike, your pay will stop. Unions typically set up a strike fund to help members cope with the loss of income during a strike. Union member dues support the strike fund, and each union has rules about how much members can draw from it.
Supporting strikers dont patronize campaigns that ask the public to shun the employer who is being struck. Starting a social media solidarity group. Inviting strikers to a meeting or panel discussion in your organization. When you turn out to support strikers, you are doing more than helping to win the strike.
This can be as simple as honking when you pass one, visiting the workers, having conversations, asking what is needed, walking the picket line, carrying signs, taking and sharing pictures of union actions, donating money, or bringing pizza or donuts.
When you get to the picket line, make sure to talk to them about why they are on strike and let them know that you have their back. You may also want to take pictures on the picket line or do a live stream to help get their message out to your friends.
ON THE PICKET LINE Meet new people, and introduce yourself with your workplace or union. Ask which demands are most important to them, and why. Ask if you can get their number to coordinate when to show up in the future, and stay in touch about local union issues together. Bring food and firewood.
Before you go ahead and find a new gig, make sure its not against your contract or the strikes rules. For example, your employment terms might prohibit you from working for competitors or even specifically engaging in other paid employment while on strike.
