Therefore, XPS is also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA).

A few electrons get out un-scattered and are detected as the photoelectron peaks. (mostly from the upper 10 nm of the material.)
Satellite Peaks One of the advantages in using monochromatic X-rays is that the distribution of the photon energies used in the analysis is narrow compared to the unfiltered X-ray line and therefore improves the resolution of the photoelectric peaks in the XPS spectrum.
XPS is useful for quantitative analysis of surface composition and can detect all elements with the exception of hydrogen and helium through the detection of the binding energies of the photoelectrons.
