Which Running Foot Strike Would Suit You Best? Some distance runners will do best with a gentle heel strike, while others will better suit a midfoot striking running style. Sprinters in comparison will usually be better served with a forefoot running technique, landing higher up on their toes.
If youre forefoot running, then youd want your forefoot to hit first. If youre mid-foot running, youd want the entirety of your foot to land at just about the same time. And if youre heel striking, then your heel should land first and then smoothly transition to a toe take-off.
Rearfoot striking is by far the most common footstrike pattern in (shod) running (24, 27). The prevalence of rearfoot striking may be influenced by running velocity (8), footwear (8, 28), habituation to footwear (30), running distance (26), competition level (25), age (29), and fatigue (9).
Most runners, about 80%, strike the ground with their heel first, which is called rearfoot running. Striking the ground with your foot flat is midfoot running and running on the balls of your feet or toes is called forefoot running.
Foot strike patterns in runners are generally grouped into three categories: rearfoot strike (RFS), midfoot strike (MFS) and forefoot strike (FFS). Classification of runners into one of these three categories can be achieved by observing the first point of contact between the landing foot with its running surface.
Midfoot Strike: The ball of the foot is the first contact point, the heel lightly touches the ground straight after, then the weight progresses to the front of the foot. Heel Strike: The foot lands on the heel first, then the weight progresses to the front of the foot.
If your heel hits the ground first followed by the rest of your foot, you run with a heel strike. If you hit the ground with your mid or front first, you are a mid- or forefoot runner.
If youre forefoot running, then youd want your forefoot to hit first. If youre mid-foot running, youd want the entirety of your foot to land at just about the same time. And if youre heel striking, then your heel should land first and then smoothly transition to a toe take-off.
