Most runners, about 80%, strike the ground with their heel first, which is called rearfoot running. Striking the ground with your foot flat is midfoot running and running on the balls of your feet or toes is called forefoot running.
A midfoot strike is one in which the runner initially contacts the ground across the metatarsal heads with the heel subsequently contacting the running surface while the forefoot strike is also one in which the initial contact is also on the metatarsal heads but the heel never touches the ground.
Heel strikers have a greater risk of injury at the knee and hip, while forefoot strikers have a greater risk of injury at the Achilles tendon, calf, ankle, and foot. There are far more effective ways to improve performance than switching your foot strike.
If youre forefoot running, then youd want your forefoot to hit first. If youre mid-foot running, youd want the entirety of your foot to land at just about the same time. And if youre heel striking, then your heel should land first and then smoothly transition to a toe take-off.
Foot strike patterns in runners are generally grouped into three categories: rearfoot strike (RFS), midfoot strike (MFS) and forefoot strike (FFS). Classification of runners into one of these three categories can be achieved by observing the first point of contact between the landing foot with its running surface.
The footstrike pattern of an athlete is understood as the way the foot touches the ground. Over the years, several definitions and techniques to classify and quantify footstrike patterns have been described.
Is a midfoot strike better for running? Yes, a midfoot strike allows your body to better absorb the impact forces while running. Heel striking results in a more abrupt ground impact as the calf and achilles are not able to absorb forces at ground contact.
