in this video we are going to look at group policy preferences and how attackers can take advantage of these to gain privileged elevated access to your environment with no rights required the concept here is based off of a more legacy feature of active directory that allows you to use preferences within group policy to specify passwords that get pushed out to all of your domain member servers and one of those passwords commonly used is the administrator password so you can see here iamp;#39;m on my 2008 domain and if i come to the group policy settings i see under preferences local users and groups and that allows me to do things like set a policy preference to update the built-in administrator account and i can type in whatever password i want so i can type in top secret password and now whatever group policies whatever systems are tied to this group policy that password will get pushed down and become the password of the local administrator account which has full admin rights on tha

One of the most popular SHA-256 uses is password hashing. Instead of storing the actual passwords, companies derive their hash values instead. Its much safer for the user. Every time you enter your password, the system derives a new hash value and checks if it matches with the one stored on the database.
Masking does visually block the password so that users cant immediately see what it is. This is useful to prevent someone from looking over your shoulder and seeing what the password says. But it doesnt stop a user from finding out what that password is.
MD5 reigned supreme for several years but bcrypt was in the lead in 2020, 2021, 2023 and again so far in 2024. Password storage solutions like LastPass, 1Password, and Bitwarden use the hashing approach called PBKDF2 salted with a strong hash alternative to MD5, called SHA-256. Even NIST recommends PBKDF2 SHA-256.
Encryption scrambles data that can be decoded with a key. The intent is to pass the information to another party, and the recipient will use keys to decipher the data. Hashing also scrambles data, but the intent is to prove its authenticity.
Password hashing involves using a hash function to combine a password with a unique value called a salt. This process is repeated multiple times based on a set difficulty level. Sometimes, additional memory usage is included to make the process even more complex and secure.
While Argon2id should be the best choice for password hashing, scrypt should be used when the former is not available. Like Argon2id, scrypt has three different parameters that can be configured: the minimum CPU/memory cost parameter (N), the blocksize (r) and the degree of parallelism (p).
The most common password hashing algorithms are PBKDF2, bcrypt, and script. PBKDF2 (Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2) is a widely used algorithm that employs a salt to protect against brute force attacks.
Whats the Most Secure Hashing Algorithm? SHA-256. SHA-256 (secure hash algorithm) is an algorithm that takes an input of any length and uses it to create a 256-bit fixed-length hash value.
